A cross the globe very few areas are left today where human intervention has not altered the ecological structure and function of endemic ecosystems. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Prafulla Soni

Dr. (Mrs.) Prafulla Soni, is presently Scientist & Head, Ecology & Environment Division, Forest Research Institute, dehradun. She joined FRI after completing her Doctorate degree from Banaras Hindu University in 1973. For past 32 years, she has worked on various aspects of ecology and has made important contributions in the field of restoration ecology. She has to her credit 90 research papers in various National and International journals and two authored and two edited books. The technologies feveloped by Dr. Soni have been widely appreciated not only India but also abroad. She was invited by U.S. Department of Interiors to present he work. The technology has also been transferred through consultancy projects to coal, magnesite and limestone mines in different parts of the country. Besides, she is also active in capacity building programmes as the Course Director for “Ecorestoration of Wastelands” and “Environmental Awareness” training courses organized by Forest Research Institute, Dehradun for, senior level executives of various departments and mining industries. Indian Council of Forestry research & Education has awarded her the “ICFRE Award” for appreciation of her contributions in the field of Forest Conservation.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Veena Chandra

Dr. Veena Chandra has done her post graduation in Botany and Doctorate from Gorakhpur University. She is working as a scientist in Botany Division of Forest research Institute. Her area of specialization is Plant taxonomy and has a vast experience in floristics, flora writing, revisionary studies and ethnobotany. She has authored five books and over 50 research papers.
