The simplest definition of nationalism is loyalty and devotion to one’s nation or country. Nationalism is an ideology that creates and sustains a nation as a concept of a common identity for groups of humans. According to the theory of nationalism, the preservation of identity features, the independence in all subjects, the wellbeing, and the glory of one’s own nation are fundamental values. It is a strong social phenomenon in the world as national flags, national anthems and national divisions. Moreover, some scholars argue that nationalism as a sentiment or form of culture, sometimes described as nationality to avoid the ideology’s tarnished reputation, is the social foundation of modern society. Industrialization, democratization and support for economic redistribution have all been at least partly attributed to the shared social context and solidarity that nationalism provides.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Shailesh Chandra

Shailesh Chandra (born, 1941) is an eminent historian, having a brilliant academic record (M.A., M.Phill.) he has secured various gold medals and national merit scholarships for the studies. He did a lot of research work on Indian struggle for Independence. A lot of articles and research papers regarding history are to his credit. He has imparted his knowledge to the students of graduate and post-graduate level at St. Lawrance College and National College in South India. During the time he has participated in number of seminars and national conferences. After retirement he has fully devoted himself as consultant to many institutions.
