New information keeps on expanding and enriching every sphere of knowledge. Plant Physiology is more like a rule of this dictum. The primary motivation for preparing this text was our own need for organizing a document on the subject that presents the current scenario of advancements in fundamental concepts and the perspectives of application.
Amidst our endeavour, we came across a quotation of Albert Einstein. It conveyed the need of equal emphasis on fundamentals and applied aspects. Further, it projected a new dimension that possibly, concerns for mankind and fate of mankind are located at temporally segregated scales. A common set of priorities may not serve the man and his fate at the same time. Consequently, references to green revolution and sustainability have appeared in descriptions pertaining to role of plant physiology in agriculture (Chapter 1 and 35). These Chapters are likely to inculcate interest in students. The concepts pertaining to cell structure and function have been dealt with in Chapter 2.
Biochemistry often prevails over Bio-physics in books on plant physiology. Present book is slightly tilted in favour of biophysics. In addition to an independent description, Chapters on water relations arid photosynthesis also deal with biophysical aspects of water fluxes and photon induced electron transfer. The dynamic scenario in the areas of Inorganic transport, Organic transport and Transpiration have been discussed. The biochemical understanding of processes have been depicted in photosynthesis and photorespiration and Nitrogen metabolism. Physiology of Plant growth and development has evolved over a dichotomous path. Along with the conceptual advances in plant growth, plant growth regulators (Auxins, Gibberellins, Cytokinins, Abscisic acid and Ethylene) Seed physiology, Physiology and flowering, Photomorphogenesis, Fruit ripening and Senescence and their applied dimensions have been discussed in detail. A separate chapter have been included on Plant physiology in agriculture and industry. This Chapter also encompasses modern strides in biotechnology viz. cellular factories and molecular farming, and concerns for sustainable agriculture. Movements in plants, Circadian rhythms, and Physiology of abiotic stresses are the topics of current interest. The molecular aspects of these physiological activities have been added in this new edition.
