In South Asia poverty manifests itself in its starkest form as a visual of semi-starved, ill-clad, deprived millions of countrymen, thousands of them dying everyday from malnutrition, ill-health, and lack of basic amenities: a picture which is both appalling and agonising form any standards of human existence. Eradication of poverty and the ending of hunger have long been recognised as among the most central challenges before human society. Equitable patterns of growth are essential for sustainable poverty reduction. Policies supporting economic stability, as well as embedded safety nets are necessary to reduce poverty and protect the poor. Strategies to reduce poverty must be situation-specific, directly addressing the realities on the ground. This work is a pioneering attempt by a reputed scholar. It will be highly informative to scholars and professionals in governmental and non-governmental organisations, social service organisations and the lay public.
