The Series on Practical and professional Ethics is an outcome of major research project funded by the U.G.C. in which the task of resolving some value-laden practical problems troubling the professionals and the non-professionals in India as undertaken. Apart from clarifying the nature, tasks and interrelation of practical and professional ethics, volume one clarifies the nature of ethical or value-laden practical problems such as Environmental, Biomedical, Educational, economic and Business and Socio-political Ethics. This volume deals with the nature analysis and aims of education, educating, teaching and training. Analysing the nature of ethics, especially educational ethics, it offers an elaborate discussion on the justification of educational ethics as a sensible and valuable study within ethics, showing how the normative, meta-ethical, value and virtue ethical, and practical reflections have relevance in the field of educational ethics. The book also considers the way in which some important value-laden educational problems in India, such as privatization of education, sex education, banning corporal punishment to students, medium of instruction in educational institutions and spiritual/religious indoctrination as the basis of value-based education should be resolved. 

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Debashis Guha

Mr. Debashis Guha teaches Ethics and Phenomenology and Existentialism in the Post Graduate Department of Philosophy, Ranchi University. After doing masters course in Philosophy from Delhi university in 1980, he was conferred the Ph.D. degree of Jadavpur University in 1988. Dr. Guha takes interest in Philosophy of religion, Social and Political Philosophy, Philosophy of Science and Analytic Philosophy. He taught at the undergraduate level in constituent college of Ranchi University from 1981 to 1989 and was then asked to serve the post Graduate department. Dr. Guha is teaching Ethics for twenty-four years. He was awarded the Visiting Associateship of the U.G.C. (1994-96) in jadavpur University, Calcutta, Where he worked out an Inquiry into the Cases of pain and Suffering, Which awaits publication. He was further awarded U.G.C.'s Major research Project (1997-2000) on Applied Ethics in Indian Context, Which has been now shaped in six volumes, of which the present work is the first under the series: Practical and professional Ethics. Dr. Guha has twelve papers to his credit, two of them presented in International Congress. During his Major research Project work. Dr. Guha has talked to many people from different walks of life, interviewed them and also arranged ethical dialogues leading to resolution of value-laden practical problems of urgency. Dr. Guha envisions people's participation in Practical and professional Ethics.
