With the adoption of globalization and trade liberalization, Indian economy is subjected to the global pull and push. The economy has undergone a structural change with service sector being a major growth factor in it. The share of service sector in GDP is above 54%, which employs about 27% of total employment. Productivity remains the key deciding factor for firm /industry competitiveness. What matters in the era of globalization and liberalization is the relative productivity. Measuring productivity and identifying key drivers of productivity are challenging issues in the new economy with more and more intangibles forming part of the output of the economy. Another interesting aspect of globalization is the commonality of issues, which different countries are facing. There is more scope for learning from other countries and making one s learning curve steeper. This book aims at giving an overall understanding of 21st century in terms of work, environment and economy supported by relevant articles dealing with trends, issues and challenges. It is hoped that the thought-provoking articles of this book will help the readers understand different aspects of the issues of raising productivity under different work environments. It is also hoped that these articles will help researchers, policy makers and practitioners in formulating methodological aspects of further work to study and strengthen growth in the light of globalization, structural change and a shift to service.
