This sociological survey of the Urdu Medium Elementary Schools in Delhi was conducted with the specific objectives of finding out their teachers ‘perceptions of the society’ expectations from them; problems faced by them; their perceptions of the roles of their reference groups, and their viewed on how a functional improvement can be brought about in these deprived schools for India’s Largest Muslim Minority Community. The teachers were also motivated to present their own perceptions of their Preferred Model of Elementary Education in Urdu Medium School for the New Millennium. The findings of this sociological survey are revealing – there is gross normlessness prevailing there. The schools are ill-equipped and unmotivating and the authorities, parents and social, political and community leaders are just unconcerned about them. The actual teachers in these schools, who are never consulted in any educational matter and decisioning, are really full of functional ideas on the basis of which these ill-fated schools for the minority community’s common man’s children can be and must be overhauled with a sense of urgency."
