After reading this book the reader will be a master in using C and Excel for solution of civil engineering problems and it will be a major step in training the civil engineering students in software design in total, the reader will get knowledge of CAD in civil engineering. Development of algorithms for the analysis of cantilever, simply supported, proped and fixed beams are explained step by step. A single general program to compute SF and BM for all the four types of beams are included. Use of C graphics to plot SFD and BMD has been explained in detail. Algorithm to design singly reinforced and doubly reinforced beams by limit state method as per IS 456 is extensively explained. Individual programs for singly reinforced and doubly reinforced beams have been provided and a single program to design both the types is also included. Use of STRAP and STAAD for analyses of beams and frames are explained step by step. Demo versions of these softwares are available in the CD enclosed. Use of Excel for transportation, survey, irrigation topics is explained along with explanation for development of algorithm. Graphical representation of the output using chart wizard of EXCEL is highlighted.

Dr. G. S. Suresh, Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering, The National Institute of Engineering, Mysore, has twenty three years of teaching experience and has acquired his Doctorate in Civil Engineering from the prestigious Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He has taught computer subjects to both students and working professionals. He has vast experience in developing softwares for analyses and design of many structures like Building frames, Footing, Retaining walls, Staircase etc. Further, as subject expert in VTU-EDUSAT satellite based programme, he has taught Structural Analysis, which was beamed over satellite to all the VTU constituent colleges.

M. N. SHESHA PRAKASH, PhD (IISc Banglore), is Professor, Department of Civil Engineering and Vice Principal, Vidya Vikas Institute of Engineering and Technology, Mysore. Earlier, he was Professor at Jawaharlal Nehru National College of Engineering, Shimoga for over 24 years. He has over 27 years of teaching experience. A gold medalist from Mysore University, Professor Shesha Prakash has published over 160 technical papers in reputed international and national journals and presented several papers at international and national conferences. Besides civil engineering subjects, he has also taught computer subjects such as CAD, C and C Graphics, C++, and OOPS and has designed various software programmes. As a subject expert in VTU–EDUSAT satellite-based programmes, he has taught civil engineering courses. Professor Shesha Prakash has authored a number of books.
