This book is about the impact of Doordarshan on tribals in different sphere. It has tries to analyse the relationship between tribal community and Doordarshan and their exposure to this important and effective media of mass communication towards their educational, cultural, economic, political as well as social development. It has also tried to analyse the impact of Doordarshan on tribals towards continuity and change. The present book is divided into seven chapters. The first chapter deals with concept, tribe, tribalism, de-tribalization, and earlier literature. The second chapter is Doordarshan: A profile is related with the Profile of Doordarshan. The Third chapter Doordarshan: A microscopic study is related with the methods used in the study of this work. The fourth chapter Doordarshan: An overview of the viewers. The information related to Doordarshan and other mass media as well as their exposure to these media have been analysed in the fifth chapter “Doordarshan and other Mass Media.” The educational, social, economic and occupational, cultural and political development and continuity and change among the tribal community with related to the impact of Doordarshan has been analysed in the Sixth chapter, i.e. Doordarshan: Change and development. The seventh chapter is the conclusion of the whole work. In nutshell, various programmes produced by Doordarshan are producing good impact on the tribal society and in this process, tribal life is changing in its every spheres. At present, he is working on Caste Dynamics: “The Bhumihars of Eastern India”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Sushil Kumar Sinha

Sushil Kumar Sinha (b. 1964) completed his B.A. (1984) from Patna College, Patna, and obtained his M.A. (1986) and Post-M.A. (1988) in Adult & Continuing Education from Delhi University, Delhi and another M.A. (1999) in Sociology from Ranchi University, Ranchi.  He has worked as Investigator in Research Wing of Doordarshan and has attended training in Research Methodology in Mass Communication at Bhubneshwar (1994), Hyderabad (2000) and IIMC, New Delhi (2002), presently (From' 2003) working as Research Officer in NCBC, Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, New Delhi.  He has authored following books: a) Sociology of Media: Impact of Doordarshan on Tribals; b) Doordarshan: Vivid Aayam; c) Globalization of Indian Broadcasting; d) The Bhumihars: Caste of Eastern Indiqa; and e) Backward Classes of India: Various Dimensions.  He has also pen down articles in newspapers.  His area of interest is marginal groups and mass communication especially television.  He is currently working on Reservation in Central Educational Institutions for OBCs.
