This book covers some of the crucial issues of sustainability in agriculture, which are presented in five sections viz., Concepts and Status, Sustainable Technologies in Crop Production & Management, Sustainability of Crops in Agro-ecosystems, Agro-forestry, and Spatial Informatics in Sustainable Agriculture. The sub-themes covered in the papers are: land use planning, sustainable livelihood, shifting cultivation, wetlands, weed management, technologies in crop production, traditional knowledge and management of agriculture, sustainability of crops in different agro-ecosystems, methods and policies, digital opportunities; use of remote sensing and GIS in agro-ecological zoning and agricultural resources information technology. The Contributions by scientists, planners, technocrafts, researchers and practitioners, address both the conceptual and policy related issues with important empirical research findings.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR A. Bandyopadhyay
Dr. A. Bandyopadhyay is an agricultural scientist specializing in Genetics and Plant Breeding. He did his Ph.D. from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi. He has been working in the Agricultural Research service of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) since 1976, serving various institutes of the ICAR viz., CRRI, IARI and NAARM. He was the Director of the National Research Centre for Groundnut before joining his present assignment as a National Coordinator in the National Agricultural Technology Project (NATP) at the ICAR Head Quarters. With a large number of scientific publications, he has also been associated with the editorial boards of two national journals.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR K V Sundaram
K.V. Sundaram (b. 1929) is Founder & Chairman of Bhoovigyan Vikas Foundation, dealing with earth-care policies, tuned to the third World Countries. Formerly, chief Technical Adviser FAO/UN and the Indian Planning Commission and Consultant to several UN Organisations. His publications include 15 books and more than 160 research papers. A Regional Development Planner by profession, his technical expertise covers urban and regional planning, rural area development, multilevel planning, eco-development and human resources development.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR M. Moni
Mr. M. Moni is a senior technocraft-Deputy Director General of National Informatics Centre (Government of India). He pioneered the establishment of the District Information System of National Informatics Centre (DISNIC) in the country. With more than 20 technical reports and numerous research papers to his credit, he is currently leading the Group for formulating ICT Plans for increasing productivity in Agriculture & allied sectors. He is also the Secretary General of the Bhoovigya Vikas Foundation.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR P.S. Kundu
Dr. P.S. Kundu is the Executive Director (Technical) and Head of Agriculture and Rural Development Department in Consulting Engineering Services (CES) at New Delhi. an Agricultural Engineer with specialization in Irrigation, Water Resources, Water Management and Watershed Development and Management, did his Ph.D. in 1971 in Water Resources Engineering from Purdu University, U.S.A. He has been awarded Gold Medal by Soil conservation society of India and Commendation Medal by Indian Society of Agricultural Engineers for his distinguished work.
