India, due to its geographical position, climate and geological setting is one of the most disaster prone countries of the world and has been experiencing natural disasters every year. Though whole of the country is more or less affected by common disasters, the impact of these disasters on rural population due to its physical, poor socio-economic and specific socio-cultural condition is comparatively more and long lasting. If we analyse the Indian rural society in the context of vulnerability, it is found to be much more vulnerable to natural disasters in comparison to its urban counterpart. The book, as indicated by its name aims to apprise the readers about the impact of natural disasters on rural society and its management. It contains seven chapters with an introduction giving details about disasters, disaster management cycle and recent trend in dealing disasters. After discussing the disaster trend at world level and India, the book attempts to critically analyse the vulnerability of the country to various forms of disasters. The book gives detail of different factors influencing the vulnerability of different factors influencing the vulnerability of rural society to the natural calamities and problems and shortcomings of prevailing disaster management system. After critically analysing the rural disaster management situation, the book concludes that it is the sustainable rural development approach that can mitigate the disasters in rural India with a long-term perspective. The book suggests the role of PRIs, as implementing agency in managing disaster, in an effect manner in rural areas. The disaster management planning at village level and utility of management tools in disaster management planning is discussed in detail in the last chapter of the book.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Satendra

Dr. Satendra is an Indian Forest Service officer of 1986 batch. He holds a doctorate in Himalayan Geo-tectonics from Delhi University. A gold medallist of the University, he completed Masters Degree in Geology and holds Post Graduate Diploma in Forestry (equivalent to M.Sc. forestry) from Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy, Dehradun. He passed Master of Business Administration (MBA) from University of Hull, U.K. and as part fulfillment of the degree he did his project work on Disaster Management in Garhwal region of Uttranchal. He also holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Ecology and Environment. Having knowledge of seven languages, Dr. Satendra is basically a Himalayan Geologist by background and a Forester by profession with analytical capacity to understand ecology, environment, natural resource management and forestry. Experience of working as in-charge of “Forest Fire Division”, Ministry of Environment and Forest, Government of India helped him in better understanding of the forest fire problem in the country, specially in the Himalayan states. The stint with Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India further strengthened his skills to use the gained knowledge and experience for sustainable and eco-friendly rural development and poverty alleviation. Being an active member of Central Teams to disaster affected areas in Himalayas and Gujarat and his association with National Centre for disaster Management, IIPA, New Delhi enabled him to understand the problem of Disaster management in the country and suggest a more appropriate and innovative approach o linking rural development with disaster mitigation. Dr. Satendra has published many research papers and articles and written three books. One of his books, published by National Book Trust of India has been awarded by Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. Currently Dr. Satendra is on deputation to Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India and also carrying out post-doctoral research in the field of Disaster Management at National Centre for Disaster Management, Indian Institute of Public Administration, New Delhi.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Vinod K Sharma

Vinod K. Sharma, M.Sc., Ph.D. is presently a faculty member in the Department of Electronics, Keshav Mahavidyalaya, University of Delhi. His teaching and research interests include Analog Electronics, Communication Electronics, Linear and Non-linear Circuits and Optoelecronics. He has several research publications in the area of Optoelectronics in various international journals.
