This book addresses the social, psychological and pedagogical factors that affect second language acquisition. The case of learning English as a second language in Sri Lanka was chosen for study. The study is based on quantitative and qualitative empirical research carried out from May 2001 to December 2001 in four ‘prestigious’ government schools in the city of Colombo, Sri Lanka. Rapid globalisation has elevated the English language as the international language par excellence. As a result many countries are encouraged to teach English to its citizens for whom English is not a native language. This book puts forward significant discoveries that would be helpful for individuals involved in planning and implementing English language programs.
