The term ‘Blue Biotechnology’ has been used to describe the marine and aquatic applications of biotechnology, but its use is relatively rare. Biotechnology is technology based on biology, especially when used in agriculture, food science, and medicine. Of the many different definitions available, the one formulated by the UN convention on biological diversity is one of the broadest: "Biotechnology means any technological application that uses biological systems, living organisms, or derivatives thereof, to make or modify products or processes for specific use."
Biotechnology is now one of the fastest growing industries in the world. From controversial stem cell research and revolutionary medical vaccines that save hundreds of lives everyday, to innovative new methods of recycling and harvesting energy to help in the ongoing effort of preserving our environment, the production of synthetic hormones from genetically engineered bacteria and chemical-free organic food that are helping people to lead healthier lives, biotechnology is forever changing the way we all live our lives.
