ABOUT THE AUTHOR Asaf A.A. Fyzee

Asaf A.A. Fyzee, an outstanding scholar of Islamic law, was the Perry Professor of Islamic Jurisprudence and Principal of the Government Law College, Mumbai. He held several public offices and was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India. He is the author of Outlines of Muhammadan Law (1949, OUP 1999) and A Modern Approach to Islam (1963).

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Ismail Kurban Husein Poonawala

Ismail K.H. Poonawala is Professor of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles. A specialist in Isma’ili studies, he is the author of Bibliography of Isma’ili Literature (1977), and the editor of several Isma’ili texts. He has also translated with annotations, Volume IX of Tabari’s history, entitled The Last Years of the Prophet (1990) and The Pillars of Islam, Volume I: Acts of Devotion and Religious Observances (2002).
