“The Tribes and Castes of Northeast India” is a collection of papers presented in a National Seminar on the Tribes and Castes of North –east India, organized jointly by Sanskriti (North Eastern Institute of Culture and Religion) Guwahati, Anthropological Survey of India, Kolkata, Indian Council of Social Science Research, Shillong, Archdiocese of Guwahati, Oisho Bani Soceity, Agartala and Biocese of Agartala.  The Seminar was held at North East Diocesan Social Forum, Guwahati, from 23-25, November 2007.
This present book contains most of the papers presented in the National Seminar on Tribes and Castes.  The Universities represented include; Arunachal, Delhi, Dibrugarh, Tezpur, Guwahati, North Bengal, Calcutta and a couple of other scholars from Mumbai, Tamil Nadu and Kerala also made their contributions.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Birichi K Medhi

Prof. Birichi K Medhi is a well known Anthropologist in North – East India.  Being a social anthropologist he penetrates into hidden aspects of human cultures of the world with special references to North-East India.  He is also novelist, poet, columnist and lyricist in Assamese language.  Medhi sees man not as an anthropologist subject only; as a novelist and short story writer he tries to understand the agonizing and devastating impacts of modernity on life cultures of North – East India.  Medhi has a number of publications in Anthropology, both in Assamese and English, to his credit.  At present, he is a Professor of Social Anthropology in the Department of Anthropology, Guwahati University, Assam.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR K Jose SVD

Fr. K Jose SVD is the Founder Director of Sanskriti-North Eastern Institute of Culture and Religion.  He is a life-time member of Divine Word Society (SVD) which has a number of Anthropological and Folklore Research Institutions world wide.  He is currently doing his doctoral studies in Anthropology from NEHU, Shillong.  He has presented several research papers in various international, national and regional seminars and has recently organized a national seminar on tribes and castes of North-East India.  His areas of special interest are mapping cultural change among the people of North-East India, indigenous knowledge systems for sustainable development and symbols as transmitters of culture of the people.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR R P Athparia

R P Athparia is an anthropologist and Head of office, Anthropological Survey of India, North-East Regional Centre, Shillong worked under a number of projects of political, social, Folklore of the castes and communities of North-East India, specially Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh. He has published a number of research papers in reputed journals of India. He has published 6 books on the Problems of North-East India.
