This is a compilation of selected papers presented at the second International Conference on Water Resources Development and Earth Care Policies held at New Delhi during 18-20, December 2002. On the basis of materials discussed, papers are grouped under five chapters, namely, Ground Water Development and Management (five papers), Drinking Water Supply and Management (six papers), Watershed Development (three papers), Water Resources Management (seven papers) ad Agricultural Development and Conservation, Development and Management of Water Resources for Sustainable Development (seven papers). While most of the papers deal with case studies and on solutions to various problems of water resources management in different parts of the country, some of them have also included economic aspects. Contributors are from Central Ground Water Board, National Institute of Hydrology, Universities and Research Institutes. All papers pertain to different locations in the country; thereby the book represents, by and large, the general approach of researchers dealing with various aspects of water resources management.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR H. Chandrasekharan

H. Chandrassekharan (b. 1952) is a Principal Scientist at Water Technology Centre, Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, also an Expert Member, Technical Committee to ENVIS, Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India. He has contributed more than one hundred scientific publications. His current interest is on the integrated appraisal of ground water systems in problematic areas.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR K V Sundaram

K.V. Sundaram (b. 1929) is Founder & Chairman of Bhoovigyan Vikas Foundation, dealing with earth-care policies, tuned to the third World Countries. Formerly, chief Technical Adviser FAO/UN and the Indian Planning Commission and Consultant to several UN Organisations. His publications include 15 books and more than 160 research papers. A Regional Development Planner by profession, his technical expertise covers urban and regional planning, rural area development, multilevel planning, eco-development and human resources development.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR R.K. Sharma

Dr. R.K. Sharma, (born 1932) Professor and Head of the Department of Ancient Indian History Culture and Archaeology and Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Jabalpur retired in 1992. Subsequently he was Visiting Professor in the University of Sagar for one academic session and Senior Research Fellow of the Indian Council of Historical Research for three years. Dr. Sharma’s contributions to the cause of Indian Archaeology in general and Archaeology of Madhya Pradesh in particular are widely acclaimed. On account of this he was felicitated by a Volume (in two parts) entitled “Heritage of Indian-Past and Present” which was brought out in his honour and presented to him in 1994. The credit of directing the archaeological excavations of Gilaulikhera, Kakrehta and Patan goes to him. A large number of research papers have been published by him in journals of national and international repute.
