Why Must We Be Mizo is the culmination of a long process of efforts for bringing about various ethnic groups of the erstwhile ‘Kukis’ during the bygone days of the British Indian period, together into the fold of ‘Mizo Nationalism’. The warrior tribes called ‘Kukis’ were used as ‘buffer people’ by the British imperialist administration to ward-off their enemies at strategic locations.  This resulted in the widespread ‘Kuki diaspora’ all over the North-East region of India, particularly in all the Hill Districts of Manipur, Nagaland, Assam and Tripura in India, Chin Hills in Myanmar and the Chittagong Hill Tracts in  Bangladesh.  In the present modern days of democratic setup in the political system, it has been a great disadvantage to them, though generally advantageous for the Mizos of Mizoram.  It is expedient that the erstwhile ‘Kukis’ should come together under the political umbrella of ‘Mizo Nationalism’, which has the most viable prospects for political survival.
