Identity has becomes an important question in different contexts globally as well as locally in the last few decades. Women Across Asia: Issues of Identities is a book about different aspects of identities among women in various parts of Asia. In spite of differences geographically and culturally, one can find out several strings of identity among women in the continent. This comes out sharply when we look at some specific aspects f culture, society, economy, polity of women in this region. The book is the collection of papers presented in a seminar organized by Indian Association for Asian and Pacific Studies in Collaboration with Women’s Studies research Centre, University of Calcutta and Institute of development Studies, Kolkata on this agenda. Later the former two institutions have agreed to bring out this volume as a jointly edited volume. Some selected papers coming out of the discussion are included in the book. With a short introduction on issues of identities in Asia, the book bring cases throughout different regions of Asia as well as specifically in India, which bear the strands of identity. The regional studies will also be accompanied by certain general studies on Asian perspective.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Ishita Mukhopadhyay

Ishita Mukhopadhyay is a M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Economics from University of Calcutta. She is a Professor in the Department of Economics, University of Calcutta and the Director of the Women’s Studies Research Centre of the University. Prof. Mukhopadhyay’s area of interest are Development Studies. She has several publications in many national and international journals.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Lipi Ghosh

Dr. Lipi Ghosh is a historian with specialization in Southeast Asian studies. She has obtained her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in History from the University of Calcutta. Currently she is a Reader (Associate Professor) in the Dept. of South and Southeast Asian Studies, University of Calcutta. Formerly she was Visiting Scholar at Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla, Maison des Sciences de 1' Hommes, Paris, School of Oriental and African Studies, London and Ford Asia Fellow and Visiting Fellow at the Institute of Thai Studies, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok. She has wide range of publications in national and international academic journals. Her other published work is Burma: Myth of French Intrigue (Calcutta, 1994).

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Suchandra Chakraborty

Suchandra Chakraborty is a M.A. in English from Jadavpur University. She id the librarian of the Statesman, Kolkata and joint Vice resident of the Indian Association for Asian and Pacific Studies. Besides writing articles and interviews for the Statesman, she has contributed to other magazines like Sananda and Femina. She has translated Moti Nandi’s Sahitya Akademi award winning novel The White Envelope. She has also translated a travelogue France O France from the Original Bengali Pharasi Desh Anya Chokhe by Priti Sanyal. She has also contributed to the Dictionary of National Biography ad edited books for the Anthropological Survey of India and Kalyani University.
