This book is an attempt to grasp and interpret the writings of some of the contemporary women writers by focusing on their responses to questions pertaining to women’s identity. These novelists belong to different countries and races, but the commonality of the issues they have raised in their writings under-scores the existence of a universal feminine urge to self-actualize by transcending the gender-related constraints. The book concentrates on how these fictionists have tried to focus on the women’s journey to autonomous selfhood, meandering through various obstacles, without limiting itself to any particular critical approach. It is hoped that it shall be of some use to scholars in understanding the various dimensions of some basic feminist issues.
