In the ancient lexicons of Vedic and classical periods, the influence of gama has been parliamentary and pivotal. NÈ yaveda by seer Bharata is a magnum opus dates back to 5th century B.C. The other important works in musicology such as Brihaddeshi, Abhinavabharati and Sangitaratnakara are from post-Vedic and mediaeval periods, distinguishly composed by the great Saivite polymaths. Thus the streams of gama consciousness and the works of Indian art and poetics went together in the creative evolution of Indian mind. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Gautam Chatterjee

Gautam Chatterjee, well-known writer, has a lineage of Pt. Ishvara Chandra Vidyasagar, with deep Sanskrit tradition and has been a close associate of Thakur Jaideve Singh. His two books (collection of plays), related to Kashmir Shaivism, have already been published. At present, working on the inter-influence of Indian Classical Music and Agam.

KN Panikkar is among the foremost historians of modern India. Formerly with the Jawaharlal Nehru University, he is currently the Vice Chancellor, Sree Sankeracharya University, Kalady, Kerala. His books include Against Lord and State: Religion and Peasant Uprisings in Malabar (Oxford University Press, 1990), Culture and Consciousness in Malabar (Oxford University Press, 1990). He has also edited a number of books including A Concerned Indian's Guide to Communalism (Penguin, 1999) and the ICHR volume on towards Freedom, 1940, A Documentary History of the Freedom Struggle (unpublished and suppressed).
