The state of Orissa nestles tranquilly on the eastern coast of India, alongside the blue waters of the Bay of Bengal. Also known as Kalinga or Utkal at various points of time in history, modern Orissa shares its borders with West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh. Carved into a separate province on April 1, 1936, Orissa is remembered in history as the scene of the gory Kalinga War (261 B.C) when emperor Ashoka was transformed from a warrior king to a peace-loving Buddhist who spread the message of love and tranquility throughout Asia.
