Starting with a recollection of Indo-Pak relations since 1947 and Indian foreign policy towards Pakistan, the book includes a chapter on Kashmir problem since its beginning to present day to clarify the historical background of the Kargil war. This is followed by a chronological presentation of events in the Operation Vijay since its beginning on May 6. Further contents of the book include chapters on 1965 war, 1971 war, the voice of editors, vox populi, views and interviews (letters to the editors), life in Kargil, the two most important chapters in this work are The Operation Vijay (The Kargil war) and A Saga of Patriotism (The Martyrs of Kargil). Rajendra K Jain of European Studies and Director, Europe Area Studies Programme, Centre for European Studies, School of International Studies, Jawaharlal University, new Delhi. He was Network Coordinator of the JNU European Union Studies Programme (financed by the European Commission) (2002-2004). He was formerly Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Fellow at the University of Constance and Visiting fellow at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, University of London and the Foundation of Science and Politics, Germany. He has been Visiting Professor at the universities of Leipzig and Tuebingen and Maison des Sciences de I’Homme, Paris.
